How to Get Faster Home WiFi
Slow WiFi is usually fixable without paying for a faster internet plan. Before you upgrade anything, try these free tweaks — then know when hardware is the real bottleneck.
1. Move your router
- Place it central and elevated, not on the floor or inside a cabinet.
- Keep it away from thick walls, metal, microwaves and cordless phones.
- Point antennas up and out for better coverage across the home.
2. Use the right band
Modern routers broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Use 5GHz when you're close to the router for maximum speed, and 2.4GHz for range through walls. Dual-band routers let devices pick automatically.
3. Reduce congestion
- Restart the router occasionally to clear it and pick a cleaner channel.
- Disconnect idle devices — every connection shares the bandwidth.
- Keep the router's firmware updated for stability and security.
4. When to upgrade
If your router is more than a few years old, or your home has dead zones, new hardware makes the biggest difference. A modern dual-band router or a mesh/extender can transform coverage in a larger home or apartment.
What to look for
- Dual-band (AC1200 or higher) for a good balance of speed and range.
- Mesh or range extenders to eliminate dead zones in bigger homes.
- Reliable brands like TP-Link and Cudy for value and easy setup.
