A used gaming laptop can get you serious performance for far less money — if you know what to inspect. Run through this checklist before you commit.
1. Battery health
Gaming laptops run hot, which wears batteries. Ask about battery health or cycle count, and expect some reduction on older units. Remember many stay plugged in most of the time, so this may matter less to you.
2. Thermals & fans
- Listen for grinding or rattling fans — a sign of wear or dust build-up.
- Ask whether it has been cleaned and re-pasted; good thermals mean sustained performance.
- Under load it should stay stable, not shut down or throttle heavily.
3. Screen & keyboard
- Check for dead pixels, backlight bleed and flickering.
- Test every key and the trackpad; confirm backlighting works if advertised.
- A high refresh rate (120Hz+) is a big plus for gaming.
4. Performance & storage
- Confirm the exact CPU and GPU — these define gaming performance.
- Prefer NVMe SSD storage; check remaining capacity and health.
- More RAM (16GB+) keeps modern games and multitasking smooth.
5. Ports & extras
Test USB ports, HDMI, and the charger. Make sure the correct power adapter is included — gaming laptops need high-wattage chargers that are pricey to replace.
